Percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie explains how the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games offer an opportunity to improve communication between people.
Culture is a form of communication.
Culture
is about action; it’s about sharing, giving receiving – all sorts of
things like that. There are simply no barriers to culture. It forms
better communication between people.
There is such a rich
history here, there are so many things to do, to see, to participate
in, but, you know, we have to work hard at making sure there is
something there for the next generation. It’s probably the most
important thing we have to invest in for the growth of ourselves,
really.
As a youngster, a twelve-year-old in fact, I remember
being inspired during my very first day at secondary school by seeing
the school orchestra play. Having had the opportunity as a professional
musician to travel around and to experience so many different aspects
of life has been of massive benefit to my overall growth.
Olympic
spirit, you know, is a celebration of people’s achievements. It’s a
chance to really push those boundaries; it’s a chance to bring people
together and celebrate what human beings can do.
This is an
opportunity for us to really broaden our horizons and get to know about
different cultures: keeping us together, basically, helping and giving
us hope, really, for the next generation.
Culture and the arts are the most important ingredients that we have to address in order to live in a better world.
