Children's Promise

Children's Promise

All children born on '20/12' day - 20 December 2004 - have the opportunity to be part of the Children's Promise scheme and feature in a ceremony in 2012. Some celebrated their fourth birthday with Olympic champion Jonathan Edwards.
(Singing: ‘Happy Birthday’)

Jonathan Edwards, London 2012 Board member:
I think these kids are going to grow up for the next three and a half years looking forward to playing a part in 2012, and I think it's going to very inspirational for them, not just for the next three and half years but I think for the rest of their lives. There's nothing quite like an Olympic and Paralyimpic Games. They’re going to be right at the heart of it and I think it's going to be life transforming.

Father of one of the Children’s Promise children:
I work in London all the time so when I drive past I slightly see behind the fencing and I always want to know what goes behind it, so looking at it now I can see it - I'm very impressed with it, very impressed.

Mother of one of Children’s Promise children:
They've come along leaps and bounds, there's so many exciting new things happening out there, you can see where it's actually going to be a stadium, it's actually going to be an Olympic village rather than before where it was just obviously a building site and you'd see the diggers and think: "Oh that's what it's going to be in the future", but now it's actually coming together. It's really fantastic what's going on there.

Jonathan Edwards:
Well at the moment we have got 701 babies registered who were born on the 20th of the 12th 2004. We understand there's about fifteen hundred so we want as many as possible to sign up, there's a deadline for the first of April next year 2009 - and then it's really important for our planning that we know the final numbers then everyone who have signed up for Children's Promise will have a part to play in 2012.
