Wembley Stadium

One of the most famous stadia in the world, Wembley has hosted some of the most memorable sporting moments in history.

Wembley is the largest of the six venues hosting the London 2012 Olympic Football tournament. It is also the second largest of all London 2012 venues, after the new Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

The design and build

Wembley Stadium opened in 2007 on the site of the old 1923 stadium. It features an arch that soars over 130m into the sky – more than four times the height of the towers of the old Wembley Stadium.

With a span of 315 metres, Wembley arch is the longest single span roof structure in the world and is visible from across London.

A truly iconic British building, the new stadium comes complete with a sliding roof to protect against bad weather.

Few additions have been made to prepare the venue for the London 2012 Games. Temporary screening areas for spectators and vehicles have also been installed.

After the Games

Wembley Stadium will continue to be used as a top-class sports facility.
