James was the winner of British Council's 'UK International Student of the Year 2011' and Vinspired's 'London Sprit Award' for his commitment to encouraging others to volunteer. He's done this by speaking at numerous events like Podium Olympic Conference, and helping other students set up their own projects (for example, ' UCL £10 Challenge', which encouraged others to turn their own ideas into short, low-cost community volunteering projects); also through other media - with articles about him on the BBC website, the Evening Standard, Study London magazine and Volunteering England's website. He also led by example, volunteering 240 hours with LOCOG as a Accreditation volunteer and interviewing prospective volunteers for the Olympics; and contributing 400 hours volunteering with British Red Cross and UnLtd. As UCLU Volunteering Officer and Volunteering Society president, he also led the Society's successful charity events for Haiti and Pakistan, in response to natural disasters in those countries.
