William is a very special young man. As the younger brother of 2 sisters with special needs, he has had to shoulder much more responsibility than most 12 year olds. He has accepted this responsibilty with a maturity beyond his years- he has even told me that he will look after his sisters when I am no longer around. He particularly spends alot of time with his eldest sister, Victoria, who has cerebral palsy and severe learning difficulties. He shows a sensitivity to her needs and spends alot of time playing with her, encouraging her to develop her skills of independence and communication. His other sister Danielle has asperger and he constantly thinking of ways to help develop her communication skills and confidence. When out with friends with special needs children, he always looks after the young person, entertaining then appropriately for their ability and giving the parent a much needed rest. Friends are always commening about his delightful manner with special needs children. Because of his experiences with his sisters, he has volunteered to work as a buddy at a local play project that provides disabled young people play and leisure opportunities.
