The Olympic Torch as a symbol for peace and solidarity describes the joint commitment of the United Nations and the Olympic Movement to promote peace and human understanding.

One of my main tasks as the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Sport for Development and Peace is to strengthen the use of sport with all its positive values and impact as a tool to achieve development and peace. The Olympic torch is a symbol of human understanding and collaboration and it is my honour to carry this symbol as a Torchbearer for the 2012 Torch Relay and leading up to the London Olympic Games to support the Olympic ideal and the Olympic Truce as a United Nations representative.
