Carrying the Flame on
Victoria's nomination story

Vicky is a remarkable young woman who is always upbeat and positive, despite having been left totally blind at the age of 11 months by a brain tumour. Her sense of humour extends to her own blindness, putting new acquaintances at ease; a typical line of Vicky's is, 'I didn't see you there, its so dark in here!' Her good spirits are a source of joy and encouragement to all her peers, sighted and non-sighted. She is a member of the Oldham Youth Group for young people with visual impairment, and is a brilliant role model for all: Vicky inspires in everything she does, tackling anything from abseiling to dancing with a smile and a joke. I don't think anyone who saw her will forget her determination on the climbing wall and the high balance beam. Even the cool, street wise members of the group were visibly awe-struck watching her, and learnt from her example. Despite the challenges she faces, Vicky is a warm-hearted friend who nurtures others. Her personality shines in all she does, and I cannot think of a more appropriate person to bear the torch and spread some of her amazing spirit. Vicky will undoubtedly inspire other young people with disabilities, and could be guided while carrying the torch by one of her many sighted, or less severely visually impaired friends.
