Van's nomination story

Mr Truong is head teacher and founder of the Indo-Chinese community centre and school, providing services to the local Chinese community in London. The community centre provides a nursery, drop in centre and elderly club, while the school has taught children Mandarin language and culture every Saturday for 29 years, 2012 will be the landmark 30th anniversary! Mr Truong dedicates 7 days a week to the community and encourages young and old alike to show integrity and honesty in their endeavors. Mr Truong was born into extreme poverty in Vietnam, lived through the Vietnam War and came to England as one of the many 'boat people' in 1979; his achievements are not only astonishing, but inspiring. Awarded an MBE for services to the local community in 2010, he will be a fantastic choice to bear the Olympic torch as an example of diversity and opportunity within this country.
