In April 2009 Tom was critically injured in a fall in Switzerland. As a result of his accident, Tom endured many operations, the longest lasting 9 1/2 hours and he is now paraplegic.'
'
Against all odds he is now living an independent life in Swindon. Despite his situation, he has never once complained about the difficulties he faces. This seems unbelievable but is true -'
I spent months with him during his rehabilitation. '
'
The word inspirational is considerably overused, not in this case. Tom has demonstrated exceptional development of his body, mind and will, remaining positive throughout his experience and ensuring his disability has not negatively changed his life. Since his accident he has continued maximising his life opportunities be it been rock climbing, skiiing, canoeing etc.'
'
Such is Tom's attitude to life and his position as a truly inspirational role model, he has been asked by the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries to return to the unit to meet newly injured patients, helping them to appreciate how rich life can be post injury.'
'
The fact that Tom is not only able to overcome his injury but have the personal strength and compassion to support other people through such a traumatic phase of their life makes it an utter privilege to be part of his life.'
'
His positivity, dogged determination, grace and hope reflect the behaviours of great Olympians and this is why I believe he should carry the Olympic Flame.
