Tom's nomination story

I am nominating my friend Thomas Paine, because I believe he has the characteristics and personality as highlighted by the Olympic Ideals, to represent Lincolnshire by bearing the torch. Tom is a very talented swimmer, he doesn't just swim because he is good, but because he enjoys it. Throughout our friendship, he has performed consistently and reached national times across the age groups. This has required huge commitment which has inspired me to do what I enjoy - not give up even in tough times. I play football and went through a period where I wasn't playing well. Tom subconsciously inspired me to achieve more. Tom trains for 20 hrs a week; 3 days starting at 5am. He still manages to organise his training and A Level work at a high level. This commitment inspires many - he was awarded the role of Sports Prefect this year. He encourages the younger performers, even those who participate within sport for fun. Tom shows how to be a real friend - he is cheerful, supportive, friendly and even with his demanding schedule, he is able to balance a social life with work and his swimming. Sadly last year, Tom lost his Mum to cancer, he now swims to achieve, supporting the memory of his mum, and I know how proud she would be if he was to be a torch bearer. He is liked by all - he shows respect and understands individual needs. He is a leader to everybody whilst still managing to achieve at elite level in his swimming. I believe Tom has the perfect qualities for a torch bearer.
