Tom's nomination story

For many years Tom, now in his 20's, has done exceptional work voluntarily with young people in rural settings through the Boys Brigade (boys and girls) whose age range is from 5yrs to over 20 years. He accepts young folk 'just as they are' educationally, physically and emotionally. He helps them reach their full potential, through sports activities and challenges which help them to become good team workers, respect others and be good citizens as they seek the good of all. Tom's home is Market Weighton, East Yorkshire but during the week he works as a teacher in North Yorkshire. When his father Tony who was leader of the BB in Market Weighton died suddenly 3 years ago Tom committed himself to leadership of the company even though it meant him travelling many 'extra miles', every weekend after work and often in bad weather, back to Weighton to keep up the good work his father started and so as not to disappoint the youngsters.Tom is caring, helpful, friendly and trustworthy - a true local hero . He is very popular and worthy to carry the Olympic flame which he would see as an honour.
