I would like to nominate my Dad, Steve McLelland, aged 57. My Dad has given his free time to a huge number of charitable organisations, together with numerous fundraising committees.
Since 1996 to the present 2011, he has run in the last 16 consecutive Flora London Marathon events, raising just under £45K. Over the past 30 years he has completed regularly in the Swansea Bay 10k road race. One year he ran the 1k and 5k races dressed in the Swansea City FC Mascot 'Cyril the Swan' costume.
Dad regularly competes in 5k, 10k and half marathons in South Wales. Dublin Marathon, Dad ran this in 2009 and is running in it again this year on 31 October.
In 1970 and 71 he gave up Sunday afternoons to visit Morriston Hospital where he would transport patients in wheelchairs who wished to go to the chapel service. This let to him being asked by the League of Friends at the hospital if he would like to become a volunteer programme presenter on the hospital radio station to which he agreed. Being a sports fan, he presented the Saturday evening sports programme between 6 and 9 pm. He did this for two years between 1971 and 73.
.I have no hesitation in recommending my Dad as an Olympic Torchbearer and I can assure you that he would be a very proud man if he were to be selected for his achievements and services to charities in the local community and Swansea City Football Club and associated events. CR
