Steven's nomination story

(Centrica) I enjoy my career with British Gas spanning now 36 years. It has given me a wonderful life and the benefits associated. I have an exemplary attendance record and have not had a sickness absence in the last 25 years. I am a grandparent with 4 children aged 31,28,26,12. I felt something was missing in my make up and decided to get involved with the 'Butterwick Children's Hospice'. Over the 10 years that I have been involved with this charity I have donated time and energy into this worthy cause. I have completed several worthwhile fundraising activities for the children at Butterwick. i have climbed Everest to kala Pathar, I have climbed Kilimanjaro, I have completed ultra triathlons and extreme challenges an example is 150 miles in 5days unsupported, in one day I completed a 75mile challenge which involved a run to work 27 mile, a lunch time swim of 27 lengths at a local swimming pool and a gentle cycle home of also 27 mile. It was quite a day but was cheered on by my work colleagues. Several charities have benefited not just Butterwick but help the aged and Cancer Research. I have arranged 'get involved' days and encouraged local managers and apprentices from the Engineering Academy to give up their spare time to give something back to the community. I also supported junior football and training a local team. I decided to help the terminally ill children in a different way so I trained to be a counsellor for Butterwick so I could talk to the parents and children which have bought me valuable skills which I use when dealing with young apprentices within the Engineering Academy.
