Steve was always a long distance runner, who competed in several marathons, as well as a cyclist. Whilst working as Executive Head of two Cornish primary schools he used to regularly 'commute' between them by bike to promote his health and fitness and in consideration of the environment. It was not unusual for him to pitch up at local Heads' Meetings kitted out in running gear or with his bike and cycle helmet! A couple of years ago Steve was doing his usual cycling from one of the schools into Camborne for a meeting when he was suddenly knocked from his bicycle and crashed violently to the ground. He received severe head injuries and initially it was 'touch and go' as to whether he would survive at all. He spent several difficult weeks in Derriford Hospital and the long term prognosis was very uncertain. Eventually he returned home to continue his slow road to recovery amidst a considerable amount of speculation as to whether he would actually return to take up the reins at school again. Anyone who might have contemplated this notion, didn't know him very well. Steve's grit and determination coupled with his commitment to his pupils and his staff got him back on his feet and gives his story a happy ending. He is now back leading his school on full throttle and a couple of weeks ago ran a half marathon. A truly inspirational person 100% worthy of the opportunity to carry the olympic torch.
