Sophie's nomination story

Sophie is a young carer in year 10. She has been caring for her injured mother since 2007. Being a young carer Sophie has the responsibility of looking after her mother and doing household chores. This is from 6:30 am when she gets up an hour before school and sometimes up to 3 hours in the evening on a normal school week. These hours are longer at the weekend and during school holidays. Sophie shows empathy towards others and has a caring nature. Sophie tries to do homework at school during her break times to enable her to have the time to help at home. She rarely has the opportunity to socialise with friends, but when she does, Sophie often feels worried that something will happen to her mother. Sophie's situation becomes harder when her Father is ill. The family relax by watching TV, as her mother does not like going outside. Sophie would love to have the time to take part in more opportunities outside of school but the family struggle financially.
