Sophie's nomination story

I have been friends with Sophie for the last four years she has always been fun and easy to talk to, got loads of us into running and a top student in her Design for Textiles course. Over the last year Sophie's mum battled with cancer her whole family are active and very much part of their local running and swimming club and the cancer started to make that harder for Sophie's mum to do all the activities she wanted to, I think this was what hit the whole family the hardest. Sophie carried on doing her University course living two hours away from Newcastle in the Scottish Borders, she struggled a lot with whether dropping out and being with her family full time would be a better option but with all the strength in the world she carried on working hard at uni and visiting home every weekend. She was an inspiration to our whole year and especially our Textiles class. Unfortunately Sophie's Mum died in May but and hour and a half before she slipped away Sophie managed to tell her mum that she got a First Class Degree. We are all so proud of her and to get a First with everything that went on makes her a hero in my eyes. Her Mum was so involved in athletics and swimming that this would mean a lot to her and to Sophie so that she can be part of the Olympics and really be proud of what she achieved.
