I would like to nominate Shirley as a torch bearer for the Olympic flame. She has made a significant contribution to our local community by volunteering for the past twenty five years as a riding instructor for the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Riding for the Disabled Charity. (Its the Charities 25th anniversary this year) Shirley has made a real difference to the lives of children and adults alike with disabilities. She inspires and encourages all abilities to partisipate in the sport. Not only giving her time weekly on a Wednesday and Thursday for the riders, she also organizes fund-raising events, gives talks to local businesses and supports riders at County Championships without monetary gain. Shirley shows committment and empathy way beyond the work she does for the Charity, she supports parents/carers/riders and has become a 'friend' to many over the years. Last year Shirley was diagnosed with bowel cancer, following surgery, she took a 'break' for ten months, but has bounced back and is volunteering again. This shows what a truly inspiring lady Shirley is, especially given her age.
