Sheila's nomination story

Sheila is the chief officer for a local charity supporting people with learning disabilities and their families. She continuously campaigns and works towards giving people with disabilities the right to live the life they choose in the way they choose. She has boundless energy and enthusiasm for the organisation and for protecting the rights of people with learning disabilities. Sheila is very forward thinking in her way of working and has a vision which results in people with disabilities being given the opportunity to do things that a few years ago they would of been prevented from doing. These things include abseiling off tall buildings, rock climbing, sailing, volunteering and working in a service user led charity shop. The organisation was left a bequest and this has resulted in Sheila embarking on a fundraising campaign in order to build a 4 bedded respite centre for children with physical and learning disabilities in and around the carlisle area. In little over 6 months Sheila has managed to raise over £500000 and building for the much needed facility is underway. Sheila does all this without looking for or expecting any recognition, she is an inspiration to myself and many others around her.
