During 2011 Sharon was approached by her local council with a view to running a project installing a play area in the village, which had no play facilities for the children. Sharon was given an initial budget of £27,000 and 3 months to organise and have in place ready for use. She arranged a working party to clear a large area and got approx 50 people from local community to come along and give up their free time, a visit was also made to the local school where she took a morning assembly speaking to 90 children to find out what equipment they would like. An open day was also arranged so that anyone from the local community could come along and see the plans and have their say. Sharon got a lot of the ground works done free of charge by involving local businesses so that the full grant could be used on the equipment for the children. This was all completed from start to finish within the 3 months as Sharon was keen to have the play area in place for the summer months allowing the children to play safely.
This is not the only project that Sharon has been involved in but I felt that this shows a real community spirit and a willingness to give up her time for the benefit of others. She feels that her time is appreciated and she feels a great satisfaction of improving the facilities for not only her own family but for others in the village.
