Shannen's nomination story

Through her passion for sport, Shannen makes a huge difference in LB of Hillingdon. A mature seventeen year old, she is a tireless volunteer arranging athletics competitions, football tournaments and after-school clubs in one of the poorest areas. She offers youngsters affordable access to sport, improving their self confidence, fitness and even their social skills. Shannen won the Mayors of Hillingdon's "Young Volunteer of the Year' award 2010 and without her these after school activities would be significantly reduced. She was the lone female picked from the FA Leadership Course to help at the Champions League Festival 2011. This was a great achievement for Shannen and she gained valuable experience and enjoyed working with Gary Lineka and Gianfranco Zola coaching some very enthusiastic 5 to 15 year olds. Shannen lives in a hostel and despite battling her own personal difficulties continues to help young children in her community. Her lively character, relentless hard work and natural empathy, ignites a flame of pride and a love of sport in the disadvantaged children she works with that enlightens their life; perfect for an Olympic Torchbearer.
