I have never met such an inspired, caring selfless and determined person as Sean Allen. Sean has been inspired to run 21 marathons in 21 successive days following the death of his best friend from a brain tumour. He has never run a marathon before, but is determined to complete the gruelling challenge to raise funds for the baby son of his best friend, Andrew Mills. Andrew died just two weeks before his 29th birthday and is survived by his eight-month-old son Alexander. In 2005 it was discovered that Andrew had two brain tumours. Then, in October last year, doctors said he had a third tumour.
They become close friends whilst studying at Loughborough University and on a number of occasions Sean told me that if it wasn't for Andrews support he would have left as he was very homesick.
Sean initially started to raise money for the family to get a chair lift installed and for their home to be adapted after Andrews health deteriorated rapidly towards the end of last year. Andrew sadly passed in March of this year, whilst Sean was teaching in Australia. Sean felt it was all very well saying the words and raising money, but he wanted to do something to show the family how much he cared for them.
Most of the runs will be in Wales, however he plans to run one in Loughborough, Luton, where Andrew's parents live, Milton Keynes, where he and Anna lived, and also London. If there is someone more deserved of carrying the torch then could you please let them be known. CR
