Ruth Crawshaw is a very active volunteer in her role as coordinator for 'Race for Life' across the North of England which she has done for the last 5 years.
Race for Life is the flagship event for Cancer Research UK and there are 50 events in the North West and Yorkshire regions this year alone where women are invited to walk, jog or run 5K or 10K to raise money to help beat cancer. Since Race for Life began, an incredible 5.4 million participants across the UK raised over £362 million to fund the work of over 4,000 researchers, doctors and nurses dedicated to helping more people beat cancer. Cancer research relies entirely on funding from the public, it's a great cause and one that touches a lot of people's lives.
Ruth publicises the events and distributes information at major shopping and city centres around the North of the country, to encourage people to participate each year. As part of the overall planning phase, she is involved in assessing the suitability of the courses, coordinating the setting up of the courses on the day ahead of the events, organising the pre-race warm up, being on hand for any medical problems / emergencies that may occur during the race, ensuring that everyone finishes safely and tidying up afterwards. Due to the nature and timing of the races this involves a lot of very early starts and late nights!
Ruth Makes a Difference by commiting her passion and energy to this enormous event year after year. CR
