Rumi's nomination story

Rumi is a sports leader from the London borough of Tower Hamlets. Over the past 2 years she has dedicated a lot of her time to ensuring that young people in the area of Whitechapel (where Rumi lives) get the opportunity to participate in sport outside of school. Children from this area have very limited opportunity to access sport outside of school due to numerous barriers including, lack of facilities, lack of parental support and religious commitments. Rumi completed a CSLA level 2 and volunteered her time in local primary schools, getting to know the children in her area. Through her links with the primary schools she advertised an out of hours club in a local ball court and encouraged children to attend. 2 years in over 50 children regularly attend her club. This is especially remarkable considering Rumi's home pressures - looking after younger siblings and caring for her mother.
