Rodger's nomination story

I would like to nominate our son Rodger to be a Torchbearer. Rodger has played basketball for the last four years. He started playing for his school and for the last two years has played for Highland. He has just been selected to play for the Scotland under 16 squad. This involves Rodger undertaking an 8/10 hour round trip every weekend to train and play for the team in the Central Belt of Scotland. He does this with enthusiasm, committment and energy. Rodger works really hard at training most days of the week. He is a real team player and works for the team rather than himself. Rodger also helps with basketball coaching, refereeing and being a table official. He has plans to do a basketball coaching course and to help coach one of the younger teams in Highland after the summer. Rodger is very aware of the fact that he has opportunities and life chances that are not available to all. He is, this summer, going to Guatemala with a child sponsorship charity to visit the work in that country and to thereby on his return raise awareness and support for the work with children there who live in poverty. He has raised much of the money himself for this trip. Rodger has four sisters. Two of his older siblings are adopted and have special needs. Rodger has unending patience with them and has a sensitivity and care towards others that comes partly from the lessons he has learnt from living with those who have a disability. We are very proud of our son.
