Faced with the imminent closure of the village shop in the Northumberland village of Humshaugh the local residents banded together to run the shop. Dick was a leading member of the group and helped to form Humshaugh Community Ventures ltd. The company now has 200 members and 40 active volunteers who have breathed new life into the community and retained a vital service. All takings are ploughed back into the shop or used to support village projects, this year they intend to pay for new windows in the Parish Church. Dick is the current Chair of Humshaugh Community Ventures Ltd and is a well respected member of the community. In March 2011 Humshaugh Community Ventures were the winners of the 'Community' and 'Overall' categories of the Pride of Tynedale Awards.
