As a child Richard won first BBC Passion for Sport award in 1997, being picked out of thousands of other children. The prize was not really reflective of the honour, so Karen Todd nominated him to carrying the Olympic torch even if it is 15 years on

Richard Mason was the winner of the first BBC Passion for Sport award in 1997.
A pupil at Eskdale School in Whitby, North Yorkshire, he used his prize money to build a rebound wall there.( I think he won £100)
At school he was an enthusiastic sportsman and later took up new sports like windsurfing and rowing.
Richard's verdict: Winning Passion for Sport was a great experience. It was fun, and all for doing what I always enjoyed: taking part in sport.
