Rachel's nomination story

Rachel Haigh is a University of Leeds Dentistry student and our most successful BUCS athlete. She successfully manages an intense degree (30+hrs a week) with swimming training of 15hrs a week. As a former GB junior international swimmer, her attitude to training and competing has transformed the culture of University swimming. Leading by example she inspires others to improve performance & attitude in and out of the pool. Whilst not holding a committee role, she still attends club meetings & advises on key aspects to develop the University's swimming programme. Rachel earned more individual BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) points in two years than the entire University club won in the previous five seasons. Rachel is also unbeaten in the annual Leeds Varsity (vs Leeds Met) and Christie Cup (vs Manchester & Liverpool) and was instrumental in overall team victories in both competitions.
