Peter's nomination story

Peter is truly a `top bloke`, he is my father in law and I`m very proud to know him. This man epitomises the Olympic spirit - he is a survivor with a never give up attitude. After a short career in the Police he was diagnosed with kidney problems. He spent 6 years having dialysis which culminated in a kidney transplant at The QE Hospital Birmingham in 1978. He never complained or felt bitter - he handled his illness with true class and an infectious positive outlook. After his recovery he became the FIRST Transplanted person to run a Marathon in May 1981 (just 3 years after the transplant!). He has gone onto run a further 7 Marathons - all in respectable time. He also represented Great Britain 6 times in World Transplant Games winning medals in 4 of these games, including 2 Golds, one from Athens in 1982, one from Sidney 1997 ( Vet competitor) in middle distance running. He sat on the Management Committee of Transplant Sports Assoc. of GB for 20 years whilst also being the Team Manager of Birmingham Transplant Games Team. He was in fact the main local organiser of the British Transplant Games held in Birmingham in 1999. He is passionate about his sport and he has enjoyed seeing his football team Birmingham City (our only subject of disagreement as I`m a Villa fan) win the Carling Cup this season. Peter is very excited to see the Olympics come to the UK and would dearly love to be a part of this wonderful celebration of sport
