Michelle's nomination story

Michelle, now 21, is a strong, healthy, attractive and energetic girl who was born with a degree of learning disability meaning she needs daily supervision and help with decision-making. Having said that, she has an enormous zest for life and radiates happiness, cheerfulness and goodwill to her fellow men at all times. Her thoughtfulness and concern for others less able than herself are remarkable - at the local Gateway club, which she attends regularly, for example, she gently steps in to help people with mobility problems or limited understanding without being asked, and they respond happily to her care. Michelle lives with her mother and attends a special course during term-time at the local college in Bridgend, being able to take herself there and back by bus once she mastered the routine. She loves to help where possible in a charity shop, and is always eager to try new experiences. She has taken part in the Glasgow Special Olympics, winning several medals for running races. She has masses of energy and exuberance, and would love the opportunity to be a torchbearer on this occasion.
