George's nomination story

George has run every one of the Great North Runs since the run began. He has tirelessly raised money for Acorns Childrens Hospice since the untimely death of his grand daughter in December 2006 since it was Acorns Hospice that looked after George's daughter and son in law after their tragic loss. George Says 'Acorns continued to provide support for my daughter and in particular our grandson Alex, as they always do for all bereaved siblings. That support is still available to them today. Having had this experience, hardly a day goes by when I don't think of another family that will be having to endure the same' journey'. I cannot change the fact that their child will die, but I can help make a difference by fundraising to help Acorns provide vital specialist care. It is the very least I can do to repay a wonderful Hospice who helped us so much in so many ways.' Those words sum up George perfectly, he always puts other people first, helps anybody who needs it and always has a smile for everyone he meets. He is a much respected and well liked member of Elvet Striders running club and thoroughly deserves to have the chance to shine with the Olympic torch.
