I would like to nominate Michael Cole to be an Olympic torch bearer for the following reasons:
Michael is a 6th Dan black belt in Wado Ryu Karate, the highest graded black belt in the WIKF association in Ireland. He is a dedicated and talented Karateka. He has been teaching karate since 1974, over 30 years at QUB Wado karate club.
In all this time he has made no personal financial gain. The small fee collected (£2 per night) pays for the club's students to attend courses with visiting instructors, competition fees, equipment etc so Michael's classes have always been run on voluntary basis, despite his expertise and experience.
He has had personal success nationally and internationally and his students have likewise been successful. He has trained students to black belt. These successes are not his ultimate aim for his students however. He teaches the importance of respecting people and rules of fair play and self control.
He leads by example. He gives 100% in his training and expects others to do their best within their capabilities.
He has organised fund raising events, this year raising £1500 for the Japanese Tsunami appeal.
He has been and continues to be an inspiration to generations of students and members of the Wado Ryu karate club at the PEC at QUB. CR
