Maurice has established himself as one of Fife's most successful athletes with a learning disability, with training runs in excess of 25 miles a week. Maurice has won medals at 800, 1500 and 3000 metres at national track and field championships. The Chairperson of Disability Sports Fife has described Maurice as not only an exceptional athlete but a great ambassador for sport helping those more disabled than himself by taking them outdoors at weekends and pushing their wheelchairs. A student of karate, being a black belt, he has been asked by Disability Sport Fife to be a focus for a new karate club for those with disabilities. Maurice is also a volunteer at the Link Club (Special Interest Branch of Enable) in Dundee. This is a club for adults with learning disabilities. He is one of the escorts on the Link Club's minibus and assists less mobile members as part of his duties. He also helps with activities within the club. Until recently he had also been a volunteer at a local sheltered housing complex.
