Martin's nomination story

A stalwart of the Worcester community and a keen runner, Monica is always the first to offer help when help is needed and despite having retired a number of years ago, she works harder than ever for a number of charities, but now solely as a volunteer. Her foremost commitment, to St. Richard's Hospice for the terminally ill, is truly inspiring. She drives patients to and from the hospice, escorts the charity's minibus for day patients, works in the Day Hospice as a volunteer, sits with patients in their own homes while their regular carers to have a break and raises funds to help keep the charity going. Fundraising has been a continuing theme for Monica who has now run the London Marathon three times for charity, the last time in 2011 at the age of 70 when she finished in a little over 5 hours! She has raised funds for St. Richard's Hospice, MacMillan Nurses and Age UK through her marathon runs. Most recently, Monica has taken on the chairmanship of the local branch of the Soroptomists International, a worldwide women's group which concentrates on helping women to live fulfilling lives and champions women's causes. It is currently supporting women in prison, fundraising for Project Sierra which helps women in Sierra Leone suffering from fistula and is a regular supporter of the Girl Guide Movement.
