In 1999 Martin was diagnosed with ME following a serious heart virus, which he was admitted to Cardiac ICU. Recovery from the virus and ME was a painfully slow process and Martin was off work for 5 months, sleeping 18 hours a day and having to rest half way up stairs or after taking a shower. He suffered a relapse in 2005 and was ill again for several months. In 2009, having fought his way back to health he started cycling. To prove to people that it is possible to recover from ME, he decided to cycle 1,000 miles from Lands End to John O'Groats. He completed this in two weeks and raised £10,000 for the MS Society. Subsequently he has cycled 500 miles from Lowestoft to Land End for Paralympics GB, and this year completed the 3-Peaks Challenge and cycled 500 miles between them for the British Heart Foundation. Martin is inspriational to those who know him.
