Mal's nomination story

I would like to nominate my big brother Mal Lennon, who is 11 months older than me. Mal currently flies our Airbus fleet. He served with the RAF for 20 years before much to my delight, joining BA a few years ago. He had faced many challenges in the RAF including being the first Hercules Captain to land into Basra. With many scary incidents out there, none of us in the family could have predicted the personal challenge that lay ahead for him. To cut to the chase, after finishing his BA flight into Newcastle one nigh arrived at the crew hotel and started to have severe pain in his side. He ended up going to hospital where he was eventually sat down in A&E and told he had a 4.5 cm cancerous tumour in his left kidney. Two months after having his kidney removed and getting the all clear he was back to flying, to serve It was one of the scariest things to go through thinking I was going to lose my big brother when we were not even 40 years old!! It made me look at my own lifestyle and he has inspired me in the way he has unassumingly just got on with things and continues to love flying. There have been many a debate between me (engineer) and him (pilot). The thought of losing that at still a young age would have been devastating to us all in the family He is all our hero
