Lucy's nomination story

Lucy Watson is a full time undergraduate student who is current studying BA Sociology at the University of Leicester. Lucy has demonstrated a high level of commitment to volunteering since her first year at the University where she volunteered as a helper at a weekly student-run playgroup for children with a disabilities called SCAMP (Student Community Action Mobility Playgroup). The playgroup is regularly attended by up 10 children aged between 8 to 15 who have different learning and physical disabilities. Since October 2009, Lucy has worked hard to successfully raise the profile of the playgroup. Lucy designed a new publicity leaflet to promote the playgroup amongst local disability/care agencies which has boosted the number of children attending. This year Lucy became the joint SCAMP leader where she has been responsible for organising games and activities for the children which help them improve their basic motor and social skills, fitness levels and most importantly, have fun. Parents are present at the playgroup but are able to leave them in the care of the volunteers, giving them a much needed break and opportunity to chat with other parents. Lucy is always prepared to and has gone that extra mile to ensure fellow student volunteers are supported in their roles as helpers and has ensured that the children's needs have been met by organising various events such as Christmas and Easter parties to give them an enjoyable educational experience.
