Lawrence Page is instantly recognisable in his home town of Hastings as a true local hero. Starved of Oxygen at birth, Lawrence suffers from learning difficulties. Far from letting this become a cause of restriction, Lawrence has made some outstanding achievements, and become an inspiration to all those lucky enough to have met him. A keen runner, Lawrence has completed the Hastings half marathon an incredible 22 times. His love of running has also seen him travel the world, having completed full marathons in London, New York, Oslo and Berlin. Through his running career, as well as 2 parachute jumps, Lawrence has raised a staggering £188,000 for his chosen charities - The Gateway Club, Monkey World and The Firefighters Charity. Lawrence has received numerous awards from his chosen beneficiaries, including the Gateway Club Sports Personality of The Year for Great Britain in 1989, and for Hastings in 2006, and The June Chapman Memorial Trophy in 2004 As well as working for a local timber merchants for 23 years (where he has the best attendance and disciplinary record of all the staff), he has been visiting and helping out at Hastings Fire Station for over 25 years. This has lead him to become great friends with all the staff, and he was recently awarded a Community Safety award for his work. If the intention of the torch relay is to provide motivation, I can think of no better ambassador for Britain and for sport. (Lawrence does not have an email address)
