Laura's nomination story

My nominee is my niece Laura Jane Griffiths. In 2007 My husband Richard and I lost our only son Alex, aged 22 years, and his girlfriend Beth, also 22, in the Phuket Air Crash. In the months following our loss we did lots of walking in the mountains surrounding our home, accompanied by Laura. We decided to set up a charity called the Garnwen Trust and organised a walk in memory of Alex to raise funds to build a multi functional log cabin at Afan Country Park. Laura has been inspirational helping us every step of the way, organising events in our area whilst also raising money for the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff by climbing Kilimanjaro with my husband, and at the same time being our emotional 'rock'. In April 2012 she will climb Machu Pichu in order to raise more funds and is organising 'the Alternative Olympics' in our town. To date she has helped us raise £92,000.
