Kirsty's nomination story

Kirsty is a former Commonwealth Triple Gold Medallist and competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. She has since turned her talent to the community, working in the remote town of Stornoway to inspire hundreds of people to build and retain their fitness. She runs an aquafit class, a JogScotland group and for the past five years has organised the Stornoway Womens` Cancer Challenge 5k run. During that time, over 2000 women have taken part in the chance to walk/run together and thanks to Kirsty`s efforts, have raised a total of £60,000 for local Cancer Research. Kirsty is an inspirational athlete, who has helped hundreds of local people believe in themselves again. In a remote island community beset by problems of ill-health, her leadership has restored health, fitness and confidence to the community, irrespective of age, gender or previous fitness levels. She would be a worthy torchbearer for the islands.
