David Powell

David Powell will celebrate his 70th birthday in 2012. The former Welsh Guardsman married my mother in 1970 and suddenly she became ill with a rare brittle bone disease which resulted in a degenerative illness that today has left her almost blind and unable to walk. I was born in 1972 and inherited my mother's identical bone condition with serious consequences. He now cares for us both. David spent 30 years devoted to the Rhondda Polar Bear Disabled Swimming Club. Weekly he transported physically and mentally disabled children and adults to a local leisure centre to give them swimming therapy. From 1987 to 2000 he was the Welsh Coordinator of the Dreamflight to Disneyworld charity, and was sent 250 disabled and terminally ill children on a holiday of a lifetime to Florida, USA. He has raised tens of thousands of pounds for both charities. Never been recognised for his work.
