Kay has been instrumental in the development of triathlon in the region, and is an active volunteer and coach. Kay runs the Cleveland Triathlon Club junior academy, coaching the children and as organising annual training camps, social outings and workshops. Kay also takes an adult coaching group, encouraging a British Triathlon Disabled squad member to take up the sport. She helped found a women and girls Try-a-Tri campaign in 2008 alongside the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation, running Easter and summer training sessions for the Tees Valley and Middlesbrough Council sports development, Gifted and Talented scheme. She has encouraged scores of women to take up both running and triathlon; many going on to compete. She helped deliver the most recent BTA Tri a Tri initiative aimed at novices. Many have gone on to join Cleveland Triathlon Club. She helped deliver the Corus Kids of Steel initiative on Teesside, aimed at encouraging children of all backgrounds to participate in triathlon. She organised in its entirety, the Stockton Schools Triathlon race aimed at secondary school children. Kay stand out because she carries out all these voluntary hours for both her club and the region on top of being a mum to three young boys, working part time to support her family and also enjoying competing in athletics and triathlon herself. She truly is an inspiration to countless women and children across Teesside. I am mum to three boys ( but they are no longer young)
