Having suffered 37% burns when his tank was petrol-bombed in Iraq, ex-soldier Karl then underwent 5 years of gruelling skin grafts and operations at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Burns Unit. This amazing young man has dedicated 12 months of his life to fundraising for the Burns Unit to give something back to those who saved his life. Karl has challenged himself to run 52 marathons across the world in 2011 to raise money for the Unit, and he is funding this amazing feat entirely out of his army pension. You simply couldn't hope to meet a nicer guy, who in spite of everything he has been through in his 24 years has always remained positive, determined, and is an inspiration to all who meet him. He is a very humble young man, just pleased to still be alive after such an horrendous ordeal, and is determined to continue to challenge himself mentally and physically in order to help others who have been through similar experiences. He would find this opportunity a huge honour and privilege, of which I believe he is wholly deserving.
