Wilma has been an inspiration to many in Orkney primarily through her teaching of PE and dance. She taught in primary schools throughout Orkney for over 25 years bringing and encouraging sport to a generation of Orcadians. Wilma's love of sport led her to compete in the first ever Junior Inter County event (competition between neighbouring island groups) in 1947 - 1951 taking part in netball and athletics. She achieved local recognition, breaking numerous athletic records. Having always been interested in dance, once Wilma retired she had the opportunity to concentrate on relaying her passion for dance to others, particularly traditional dance. She led classes throughout Orkney and soon became renowned for her patient and elegant style of teaching so much so that earlier this year she was invited to take part in Orkney's first ever Strictly Come Dancing charity event. Wilma has spent a lifetime encouraging others, regardless of age or ability to participate in activities to keep them healthy and happy. As a public recognition, Wilma deserves this accolade in appreciation of her life's work.
