We would like to nominate our work colleague Karen, to take part in the Olympic torch relay 2012. Karen works as a Ward Sister at a hospital in Belfast. The Intensive Care Unit has hundreds of patient admissions each year from all over Northern Ireland, all with life threatening illnesses. Some as a result of traumatic accidents, some after life saving operations, others with injuries as a result of `The Troubles`. For years the work in the ICU has gone mainly unnoticed to the general public. This is the opportunity for the work of the ICU and more importantly, the work of Karen to be highlighted and thanked. Karen is one of the `Unsung Heroes` of the intensive care unit, working tirelessly in ICU for over 20 years, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her hard work and her leadership. Karen is held in high regard by nursing colleagues, domestic staff, patients, relatives and consultants. The work within the ICU is very stressful and at times sad, but she supports everyone with reassurance, and encouragement. No job is too big or too small for her. Her passion for her job is evident to all who work with her. In work, we are all aware that Karen loves to run in her spare time, and we can think of no better way to say thank you to a superb nurse, colleague and leader, than to be given the privilege of carrying the Olympic torch. This is her `moment to shine`!!
