Julia became a Brownie Leader in 2004 to prevent the group from closing and has been involved with Guides for 18 yrs giving at least 5 hrs/ week. The Edmonton group has children where English is not first language and integration with others helps grow their confidence. There is a deaf brownie and Julia and children are learning sign language. Julia volunteered at church youth group - 2 hrs/ week for 5 yrs too. Julia had an accident in 2000 which left her with two cracked discs and in constant pain until eased in 2010 by an operation. This shows an even greater commitment to the community that these activities have continued dispite her illnesses, which most people do not know about as she never complains. Since 2006, she has also taken part in four 5k events raising £2,000 for various charities - the last race was completed with a walking stick just 2 weeks before her back operation.
