Joe's nomination story

JO CLEVERLY is a most fantastic inspiration to many runners in the Greenwich and Bexley area and beyond. He will be 80 in August 2012 but still is an active member of the NEW ELTHAM JOGGERS and Herne Hill Harriers . He has organised regular handicap events over many years, is a fantastic cross country runner and is totally dedicated to helping people of all ages to become involved in running. Jo's grandfather Jo Deakin won the 3 mile race in the 1908 Olympics. He introduced Jo to running at a young age and Jo has passed on this passion to all of his family and friends. I know that Jo would be honored to carry the Olympic torch in memory of his grandfather . Jo is a quietly spoken modest man but his actions speak louder than words. He has overcome many injuries and health problems by dedication and determination. He regularly wins prizes in his age category for cross country racing. He has a wonderful sense of humour and will always be there to support his team at every race with a bag of jelly babies. He has been a great support to myself as a novice runner and on the many occasions that I have felt like quitting , have been pulled up by his encouragement and support. He has put in many hours of hard work for others over the years, organising races, running the club and raising money for charity that it would be marvellous to see his dedication acknowledged . He truely deserves to carry the Torch for Britain! Alison Burwell
