John has given a lifetime of service to Shetland and was instrumental in the provision of the sport and community facilities that Shetland currently benefits from. In his youth he was a keen badminton and football players representing Shetland on many occasions. As an adult John pursued a career in sport, youth work and community development, taking on the role of Director of Leisure and Recreation for Shetland Islands Council in 1975. Through this post John secured the strategic direction that led to the creation of Shetland Recreational Trust and the eight leisure facilities that are located around Shetland, the flagship facility being the Clickimin Leisure Complex in Lerwick. In addition, John has also been a voluntary coach working with young people in the sports of badminton and football. He was also Chairman of Shetland Recreational Trust for over 10 years and was a Councillor for Shetland Islands Council for 10 years, in the position of Vice Convener for 4 years.
