Gerard's nomination story

I would like to nominate my husband Gerard McCartan. We lost our son Danny to suicide in 2005. He was aged eighteen. Our life just fell apart but Gerard and I joined PIPS a suicide awareness group in North Belfast. Gerard was one of the first people to campaign for a suicide prevention stragey in Northern Ireland because there wasn`t any. Gerard has worked tirelessy to raise awareness around the issue of suicide talking to health ministers MP`s and MLA`s. He also talks to families who have lost loved ones to suicide as well as suicide prevention training. Gerard puts so much of his time into raising suicide awareness and prevention because he doesnt want another family to suffer the way we as a family have suffered. I`m so proud of the work Gerard has done and so is his local community because anybody that needs help Gerard is always there. I would love Gerard to carry the Olympic Torch because his hero is Muhammad Ali who carried the torch himself.
