John's nomination story

John, well known locally as the barefoot runner, has been supporting international aid agency CAFOD since his school days. John is a modest man, whose quiet but determined passion for justice inspires others in communities and schools in the north-east to see life through the eyes of some of the poorest people in the world. John has run the Great North Run for CAFOD for the last 15 years, the last four he has completed the final mile barefoot in solidarity with those who cannot afford shoes, let alone trainers to take part in sports. John travelled to Kenya last year to meet budding sporting hopefuls, who, through CAFOD, he is supporting. John has made a remarkable difference to how people in the north-east understand issues of poverty and how they can help change lives. John does go the extra mile and he does because he cares about people.
