John's nomination story

John has been a teacher, teacher trainer and writer. He has written over 1,000 articles and 10 books. In 2009 he was diagnosed with tongue cancer and had a 15 hour operation to remove 2/3 of his tongue. Six weeks of chemoradiotherapy followed. As a result, John had to give up his teaching as his speech, eating and swallowing have all been seriously compromised. Despite setbacks, John has been determined to get well and has campaigned tirelessly in raising awareness of tongue cancer. Soon after his treatment, he completed The MouthCancer Foundation's 10K Walk. In Feb 2011 John was the highest individual fundraiser for the Mouth Cancer Foundation for the second year running. John now works for the police service and has since publishd 2 more books. His success in beating cancer, his commitment and dedication to change others' lives for the better is so inspiring and should be honoured.
